Getting through the Airport.
When your plane lands, you can get off the back AND the front of the plane. There are no jetways. They wheel up portable steps to both the front and rear plane exists.
Get off plane and get to immigration as quickly as possible. Delaying a few minutes can cause 1/2 hour extra time getting through immigration where you will show your passport. Make sure you have your tourist card filled out on the plane. There will be someone checking the tourist card to make sure, and if yours is not filled out completely and propertly, you will be asked to step out of line to do this.
Look ahead of the maze line everyone is in to the immigration officials in the booths checking people’s passports and tourist cards. There is usually 4-6 booths open for the 3-4 lines that form after the maze line. Try to get in a line that has TWO booths checking for that line rather than a line that has only ONE booth checking. That line will move twice as fast.
When you get through immigration, get to the baggage claim as quickly as possible. Grab your bags and then go to “customs” where they will scan your luggage. Do this as quickly as possible as short delays will cause long delays as the lines form up quickly.
Once you get through customs with your luggage, you will go through a room and you will be approached by someone that will ask you what hotel you are staying at. When you tell them, they will take you to that hotel’s booth in that room. You will see about 20 booths there. These are ALL timeshare promotions at that hotel or their “sister” hotels. Ignore those promoters, walk through the room without stopping, and go to the airport exit. You will then be approached by another promoter that will ask you what hotel you are in. These are the shuttle van promoters. These guys are OK and they will take you outside to the shuttles that will go to the area where your hotel is. You will want to use this service. It does not cost anything extra. You will pay someone else the shuttle fee and get on the bus they tell you to. This is one point where you should use the promoters suggestions. If you do get past those promoters, there will be others outside the airport. You will see many shuttle buses loading up tourists, and you will want to get on one of those that goes to your area. Again, they will find you.
REMEMBER: Get through each airport step as quickly as possible. Any delays will most likely cause you a much greater delay at the next point. There are other planes landing as well as yours, and at times the airport gets packed out. If you follow these tips, it should not take more than 20-30 minutes to get through, but if you don’t hurry through, it could take you 2 hours or more. You are on vacation and want to get to your hotel and hit the pook with a margarita in hand, and not spend 2 hours in the “Airport Gauntet.”
